POST-GAZETTE, DECEMBER 2, 2011 Page 5 NEAD Annual Community Awards Banquet by Sal Giarratani photos by Matt Conti 2011 Michelina and Raymond Costa Scholarship Recipients On Saturday evening, No- vember 19, several hundred folks from the North End or with roots in the North End like myself and my father's family gathered upstairs at Filippo's Restaurant in Keaney Sq. to pay homage to a neighborhood and its people for making the North End truly a neighborhood built on family. Hundreds showed up to see a number of community activists re- ceiving recognition for all that they do to make the neighborhood the neighbor- hood of yesterday, today and tomorrow." North Enders don't just re- side at a street address, they live in and for this neighbor- hood. The whole goal of North En@ Against Drugs is to en- sure that children can grow up safe here and be pre- pared for the future, When I think of this organization, I think of many people but first and foremost, the late Bobby DeCristoforo, or as everyone called him "Bobby D." He passed away suddenly a few years back. He died much too young but in the time he was given, he accomplished much for his neighborhood and the people, especially young people, within it. I want to acknowledge the leadership of NEAD, Presi- dent John "J.R.'-Romano. No one can take the place of Bobby D. but J.R. is a worthy successor to him. As John said recently, "As president of North End Against Drugs I am blessed to lead such a tremendous organization which has served the youth and fami- lies of the North End for over 22 years. I have such a won- derful, caring and dedicated Board of Directors, without them none of the great pro- grams, events and activities that NEAD does throughout the year would happen. I am also very fortunate to have so many generous people and businesses in our neigh- borhood that support us." This annual community service awards event is a great way to say "Thank You" to the peoplel businesses and organizations that have been nominated and se- lected to receive their award for all they do on a daily basis to keep the North End, the North End we want to have. I left this year's event both Morella Good Guy Award presented to Boston Parks De- partment Warren Watson, Michael D'Elia and Mike Barone. inspired and hopeful that the neighborhood my grandpar- ents from Sciacca found re- mains today and long into the future. 2011 Award recipients were honored in the follow- ing categories: Robert DeCristoforo President's Award Matt Conti, NorthEndWaterfront. com; Barbara DeCristoforo Senior Award Lillian Ferullo and Mary Anne Tordiglione; Emily Pugliano Public Ser- vice Award Nicole Leo, Mayor's Office; John Dexter Award Unsung Hero Award Rebecca Griffin, NEMPAC; Uncle Fred Carangelo Orga- nization Award Friends of the North End Library; N.E.A.D.
