Schmink, B.S./ M.S., Executive Officer Here's a positive story that I would like to share during the Christmas Season. I have been meaning to do this (write to the papers or TV on this topic) for the past couple of years I met and became friends with a Boston firefighter while on vacation in Aruba-- we've been there at the same time each year for the past eight years. His name is James "Fitz" Fitzgerald, of Charlestown, and he is over 70 years old now. He served as a Boston firefighter (Engine 24 out of Dorchester) for over 30 years -- in every capacity imag- inable -- until his retirement in 2009. We talk and work out regularly when in Aruba, and I also became friends with his wife, Frances. Through many conversations over the years, I discovered Fitz' passion for Christmas and mak- ing children happy at this time of year. He dresses up as Santa Claus and visits children at the Shriners Hospitals for Children bum ward, Children's Hospital, and his local firefighters' union party for kids and grandkids. He also travels abroad to Ireland with his costume and toys and does-the same thing -- every single year for the past 25 years! It is all he talks about and he completely sacrifices his holi- days to do this religiously. He is very humble about it, but once you get him talking, he has numerous stories to tell over the course of 25 years in many different venues. I would like to pay tribute to someone who has dedicated his life to public service and making the children happy during the holidays-- to a degree over and above the call of duty! Hats off to Santa Fitz! Mr. & Mrs. Stephen Ashcraft. My old friend of ten years recently surprised all at the weekly Survivors of Mt. Carmel Support Group in East Boston when he announced his wedding to Marcia Piris recently. Steve and Marcia held a wedding reception celebrating their marriage on November 14th over in Oak Square in Brighton at the PSF Community Center. Some 150 folks showed up for the celebratory dinner and great dancing to the musical sound from a terrifc deejay. I have known Steve for ten years, as he and others here in East Boston fought long and hard to save Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church and Parish. We did not succeed, but we gave it our all and in the process found friendship between all who were a part of this struggle. The entire group wishes both Steve and Marcia a long and healthy life together.
